What is a contractor?

con-trac-tor: a person or company that undertakes a contract to provide materials and/or labor to perform a service or do a job

What is a bad contractor?

A bad contractor could be a contractor in any trade; be it plumbing, A/C repair and installation, electrical, general construction, roofing, carpentry, painting, or any other trade. This can pretty much apply to anyone that you may hire to do some type of work for you at your home or place of business who doesn’t do the right thing. The “right thing” being doing the job they were hired to do the right way; the way you paid them to do it.

Maybe they are required to be licensed and insured and they are not. Maybe they start a job but do not finish it. Maybe they do finish a job but do terrible work. Maybe there are problems with the work they performed but they refuse to honor a warranty or guarantee or remedy the problem. Maybe they took your deposit and never even pulled a permit (if required) or showed up to start the job (this one could be a crime – theft – in some places). Maybe they lied to you the entire time telling you everything was going smoothly only for you to find out later that it was not and the whole thing is a total mess or that you were completely ripped off (also may be a crime in some places).

People need to be made aware of these bad contractors and the best people to make them aware are people that they have taken advantage of before. Why? Because you have first hand knowledge and if you don’t share it, the bad contractor will just move on to the next unsuspecting customer and do the same to them without ever being held accountable.

Did you know…

Too many people keep their experiences with bad contractors to themselves mostly for fear of being embarrassed in front of their peers for falling for a scam or not spotting the fraud or whatever.

Let me tell you first hand…

Don’t feel that way. It happens to us all at one time or another. The best way to prevent it from happening again is to share your story and learn from others who have been through it.

Think back…

Remember when you were in school and the teacher said “If you have a question, ask it because someone else in the class has the same question but is afraid to ask”. Life is a classroom. We are learning everyday. Be a lifelong learner.

Positive Reinforcement…

If you have a bad experience with a contractor and share that experience and then the contractor reaches out to you and makes it right i.e. corrects or remedies the issue that you had with them or their work; share that part too. Some times good contractors make mistakes. Contractors are human after all. Most of them are fundamentally good people just trying to make an honest living. Some are just frauds. As with every profession, there are always (more than a few) bad apples.

Ultimately, and this is just our opinion, it’s almost more important how a company handles a mistake or misstep rather than the mistake or misstep itself. Obviously it depends on the offense and each and every situation is unique. Agree? Disagree? It’s ok. Take it to the forums and talk about it.

A Quick Word on Truth and Responsibility…

This site runs on real stories, real people, and real experiences. That only works if we all stay honest. Please don’t post something secondhand or based on rumors. Don’t post out of anger without facts. Don’t post something you wouldn’t stand behind if asked directly.

Keep in mind; we’re not lawyers, and this site doesn’t give legal advice. Everything here is public and user-submitted. You are responsible for what you post.

We’re not here to destroy reputations. We’re here to protect people. That’s a big difference. Tell the truth, be specific, and leave room for accountability; not slander.

Finally…

Here you are. Ask the question. Share the experience. Help others and yourself. Avoid bad contractors.

This is your forum and we are just getting started.
