Hello from Chicago, IL…
I’m a renter in my early 20s, trying to fix up a basement unit I sublease. My landlord gave me the green light to hire someone to repair cracked drywall and fix a leak near the window. I found “Midwest Home Improvements” through Facebook Marketplace.
He gave me a quote of $800, seemed friendly and professional. I paid a $300 deposit through Venmo to secure the work, which was scheduled for that weekend.
He no-showed. Then ghosted me. No replies to calls or messages. I later found out from a neighbor that he’s done this to at least two other people in the neighborhood. Same name, same pitch, same pattern.
I contacted the police just to have it documented, but they said it’s a civil issue. The landlord doesn’t want to get involved, and I’m stuck out $300.
Letting others know here: avoid anyone who doesn’t give you a proper invoice, license info, or even a full name upfront. Rookie mistake, but now I know better.
