Hello from Albany, NY!
We hired a contractor to update two bathrooms; nothing major, just cosmetic updates. Things started off okay, but communication quickly went downhill. He missed deadlines, kept asking for more money “for materials,” and eventually stopped showing up altogether.
Instead of just venting, I took action. I filed a formal complaint with the NY State Attorney General’s office and the Better Business Bureau. I also left a detailed review on Google and Yelp. The contractor reached out within a week but not to apologize… because he said the “negative attention” was hurting his business.
Long story short: I got a partial refund and he agreed (in writing) not to pursue the remaining balance he claimed we owed.
The take aways that may help someone else? Paper trails matter. Public complaints get attention. Don’t be afraid to use the system.
You need to speak up.
